THE MENOPAUSE YEARS: A NEW COURSE IN LIFE
Punctuation aside, Modern Menopause is in its exclamation era. It is a hip space that is addressing the overnight shift of hormones that has women globally bursting at the seams. Hot, moody, inflamed and fatigued all debuting personalities that make one rethink what it is to be a woman.
One of the greatest universal qualities of being a woman is the instinctive role of caregiver — that generous portion of your life where you care for someone or something. It seems to be in our nature. The menopause years may just be the first time in your life that you turn your care to you.
The transition from the reproductive years to the Trilogy of Menopause, offers rhythms that fall into the categories of perimenopause, menopause and the somewhat forgotten phase of postmenopause.
RETHINKING WHAT IT IS TO BE A WOMAN
Whilst still understudied, a woman may physically feel more knowledgeable about her reproductive cycle as the process visits her every month. As for the next three phases, the information seems to fall short.
From lived experience, on the coattails of a shortage of knowledge, I assure you, PERIOD IS NOT THE END OF THIS SENTENCE!
With full swagger, we are entering a reclaimed time in our life. And we are finally talking about it.
But, first let’s unpack the physical and emotional reproductive stages of life.
So what exactly happens when your period is irregular and begins to ebb and flow.
It’s called perimenopause. Peri, Greek for ‘around’ is attached to menopause to denote a transitional period of time between a woman’s reproductive years and menopause.
Perimenopause is an independent thinker; one with a mind of its own. It’s a stage of womanhood that can reside for years. Her stay is individual but her delivery can be felt quite universally. And it can seem like it happens overnight.
Some of the symptoms that come during this stage include a fluctuation of hormones, bloating, insomnia, belly-fat weight gain, dehydration, palpitations, mood swings, stress, tenderness of breasts, irregular periods, heavy periods, increased body heat, uneven glycemic levels, nerve numbness and sometimes a mis-diagnosis for a disease you could not ever imagine.
Menopause is a natural physiological process that marks the permanent cessation of a woman’s menstrual cycle indicating the end of her reproductive years. It generally occurs in midlife and varies per individual.
Hormones naturally decline during this stage. Some perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms subside and resolve while others can remain. The completion of menopause is signaled by twelve consecutive months without a period.
Emotionally, the Trilogy of Menopause is no walk in the park. It can feel isolating, debilitating and awkward. But mostly unrecognizable.
I created this platform to specifically talk, walk and educate women through this new course of life. Not to just offer relief through a nourishing lifestyle but to help you meet the new woman in you and beyond.
